On an adventure out into to the tidepools of Pacific Grove, CA, I encountered these two crabs: a juvenile Pacific rock crab and a flattop porcelain crab. Both were about the same size, and provided an opportunity to compare two species that seem very similar at first glance but are in fact rather different. This print is a result of the observations and field notes recorded that day.

Print caption:
Carcinization is an example of convergent evolution in which a crustacean evolves into a crablike form from a non-crablike form. This has happened at least three times within the Infraorder Anomura: King crabs, Hairy stone crabs, and Porcelain crabs.

This print ships flat and is packaged with a sturdy backing board in a protective sleeve. Frame not included.
