Clams and other bivalves are members of the phylum Mollusca, which also includes snails and slugs. “Bivalve” is a term for any mollusc with two shells instead of one (or none). Many bivalves are filter feeders, though a few have evolved a predatory lifestyle. This diagram shows the diversity of forms and sizes exhibited by clams & other bivalves. Clockwise from upper left: scallop, oyster, mussel, giant clam, geoduck clam, butter clam, bentnose clam, and Pacific razor clam.

Illustration created for publication in The Ocean’s Menagerie (2025) by Drew Harvell.
