Banana slugs (genus Ariolimax) are hermaphroditic, which means that they are simultaneously male and female. When mating, they perform a circular courtship “dance” and eventually connect their gonopores, which are positioned on the right side of their bodies close to their heads. Sometimes, their long penises get lodged in their partner’s gonopore, preventing separation. To solve this problem, they take turns gnawing at the stuck penis until it is amputated. This process is called apophallation.
