The Southwestern eyed sphinx (Smerinthus ophthalmica) is native to the western states, from California to Alberta. I happened upon one of these individuals after a hike in Scotts Valley, CA - it hitched a ride on my jacket and gave me quite the surprise! Moth encounters are pretty special, and I thought this lovely species deserved to be memorialized in an illustration.
